1.I am a rock
4.The breeze blew the branches back and forth.
These 2 sentences are metaphors because they have the word 'like' and 'as'
The other two words are similies because they have the word like and as.

Metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in "The lion was a friendly kitten." So, sentence one is an example of a metaphor, sentence 2 is simile, sentence 3 is hyperbole and sentence 4 is personification.

"I am a rock" is the metaphor. A good way to spot them is to look for the poetic feeling in them, and how the things are considered one and the same.. bad romantic poetry makes great examples: "she is the sun, and I the sea", or in this case, "I am a rock -- a pebble, trampled underfoot." On the other hand, "like" or "as" are sure signs of a similie, which is only a comparison.

Sentence 1) is a metaphor because there is no comparision - you are considered as one or 'like' and 'as' are not used. 2) and 3) are similies while 4) is neither.
