It literally comes from rivers. A shallow stream will have a rippled surface as the water runs over stones. A deep river tends to have a smooth surface, so don't jump in and expect to find the bottom.

It is now used to suggest that a calm quiet person is more complex than you may at first think.

Used as a metaphor when talking about a person it means a calm exterior can conceal depths of character, thought and emotion that would not be apparent to the casual observer.

It comes from observations of water... though the surface may seem calm, deep water often has increasingly strong currents the deeper you dive.

Literally it means when the water was still it was deeper and when it was rushing like on a river it was shallower.

It can also mean when a person is quiet they have more knowledge, Then a person who talks a lot.

Or it could mean a person who is calm apearance can actualy be very wise of deep in knowlege or feeling.

Take a look at Hollywood, MTV, or most politicians; once you get behind the "Bling" there isn't much there. In contrast someone who is really good at what they do lets their actions speak for them, they don't need the "Bling."
