dvd shrink is by the far the best, if you have nero installed, it will automatically burn it to a disk for you too!

What video format are the downloads saved in? If they use the mpeg-2 standard, you can try the free DVDShrink or Shrinkto5. A little for your information, most DVD movies, the ones you get at your local BlockBusters, are on DVD-9 discs (discs which can store up to 8.5GB). On the other hand, most single sided DVD blanks are DVD-5 (discs which can store up to 4.7GB). There are software programs which compress movies on DVD-9 to fit on to a DVD-5 - that is why the program is called "shrink to 5" (or DVD-5). The programs accomplish this primarily by decreasing the picture quality and removing unnecessary components, such as subtitles. Both DVDShrink and Shrinkto5 can compress video files but you need a separate program to burn them on to a DVD blank. You can find both DVDShrink and Shrinkto5 at

You might be interested in the other programs on the webpage. Nero Burning ROM, CloneDVD and Alcohol 120% will burn the video files on to DVD blanks but they are not free. However, they all have free trial periods 3 -4 weeks.

If you are referring to DVDs here is the solution :

http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

Millions of people have been using it for years. The best program of its kind & 100% free.

Will also "backup" any & all copyright protected DVDs to any standard 4.7GB media.

It runs using the engine from popular burning programs like Nero.
