Yes, by Maurice Sendak. Also sold as part of his Nutshell Library, along with Aligators All Around, Chicken Soup with Rice, and One was Johnny. All great!
Also known by my kids as "I Don't Care" as Pierre repeats that line a lot. He says it to his parents all the time, so they leave him behind instead of taking him to town with them. A lion comes to visit and threatens to eat Pierre-he replies I don't care, and so is eaten. However, his bad attitude makes the lion sick, so he is still lying there when Pierre's parents return. They rush him to the hospital and Pierre is rescued. "The moral of Pierre is: CARE!"
They made this into a song for the musical 'Really Rosie'.
