I work in the midlands for a painting firm,im on 16.50 a hour, more experienced guys are on 25.00 and over ,just depends on the company, your experience etc.The smallest figure i have worked for was 9.00 a hour.
However if you are self employed you would price the whole job and not ask for a hourly rate

You shouldnt do it on an hourly rate but if you are and you are working on a building site for example then you should be expected to get paid between £70 and £120 per day . But really you should try and price youre job especially for residential customers prior to starting and then inform you that if it goes over the allocated time due to youre error then no extra charge but if they customer adds on extra then addistional charges would apply.
May I just note the Im not sure where some of the people on here live but for a good painter and decorator to get £10 phr would be an insult . I had a tiny bathroom and tiny hallway painted and paid £250 That was for four hours work . So in my opinion if you did want to price for residential work on an hourly basis then Nothing thess that £45-50 phr . Why not call a few companies in youre area and pretend you want something done and ask hourly rate . But you will prob find its done on a work done basis not hourly good luck though. Sorry one last thing Im in London so if youre out in the sticks then pirces could dramatically change but certianly not a tenner an hr

We sometimes employ a handyman to do stuff around the house that I can't do (and hubby has no time or inclination to do) and he charges about £150 per day. I would say that a decent painter and decorator would be able to charge about the same. Good luck.

This all depends upon the style of work which is being conducted within a residence, as an idea if you check out my services here: http://www.andyankers.co.uk/ one can find that all painting and decorating duties vary. There are many points to consider with regards to your primary question.
