My garbage pick up people make us use THEIR bins. My bin's lid is bent which makes it easy for animals to get the lid off. They won't relace the bin or lid because they say it's "Minimally damaged." My neighbor is the guy that picks up garbage. HIS cat gets into m trash and rips open my bags then HE won't pick my trash up because the bags are ripped because HIS CAT got into it. I've had garbage needing to be picked up for OVER A WEEK and every time I re-bag it, his cat comes over and digs through it again. I'm about to kill his cat, I swear..

Learn to READ, idiots. I can't buy my own bin or lid because the garbage company won't pick the trash up unless I use THEIRS and they won't fix or replace it because it's not damaged enough for them to do so. This isn't something I can fix on my own either- it needs a whole new lid to be fixed.

It's not the cat's fault, he's only doing what comes naturally to him. It's your neighbors fault. He should keep the cat inside. Everybody knows that cats are safer when not allowed to go out. There are more dangers out there than just trash bins. So don't be too hard on the cat.

As for the trash bin, maybe if you bent the lid yourself, a little more in the same manner it is now, it will have more than "minimal" damage. Don't talk to the neighbor about it, contact the local trash collection office and simply tell them your can is damaged and needs to be replaced because animals keep getting into it.

My quick answer is "no." I like cats. But for you:

You're angry at the man. Why take it out on the cat? Ask yourself these questions.

Do you really want to hurt the cat? Would it bother you to kill a living creature?

Do you think the man is fond of the cat enough for its demise to upset him or is it the family cat that he tolerates? The fact that it's dumpster diving makes me wonder if it's being well fed at home.

And-- this might be an important question-- if you do kill the cat, will the neighbor retaliate? Will he sue you or otherwise make life unpleasant if he suspects you had something to do with it?

If you aren't worried about the latter, then at least report the cat to your local Animal Control. If it's picked up, it'll at least have a chance to be adopted before it's destroyed.

Not knowing what sort of lid your bin has, if it's one of the rolling ones or what, it might be possible to secure the lid some other way, either by weights or ties.

Honey I know how you feel..except i have raccoons, wild cats and bears to deal w' along w' stray nieghborhood dogs! Have you tried finding a large rock or something else heavy to sit on top of the lid..If that won't work you could try getting your own bins and keeping your trash in there until trash day..then transferring it to the required bin. One way or the other though..you are going to have to talk to your nieghbor about his cat and tell him that you don't want too(so as not to start a pain in the azz fued w' him lol) but you will be forced to call animal control if he can't keep his cat in doors and away from your trash! Good Luck

Don't blame the cat,it's only doing what comes natural to any animal! Talk to your neighbor and come up with a plan, like a bungee cord or something to secure the darn cover.Don't put your trash out to far a head of time before pick up.Surely you can fix the problem with out hurting an innocent animal that doesn't know the harm it's doing.

I'd suggest getting a video of the cat ripping open your garbage. Take the video to the Animal Control Office, and tell them who owns the cat. Your neighbor will probably claim not to own the cat. At that point the cat becomes a "stray" and Animal Control can take the cat. IF the neighbor claims ownership he will become responsible for the damage. I'd send him a bill every time you have to pick up garbage that his cat has ripped apart. IF he doesn't pay the bill, take him to small claims court........in my area that will cost you $25 to file..........make sure he owes you enough to make it worthwhile to you.

Other than the above suggestions, I have two words for you--"air rifle"..........

Place mothballs in your bins. Cats can't stand the smell of them, so they'll stay away from your trash then. It's an easy, cheap, and animal friendly way to solve the situation.

I would say break the bin more so they have to replace it. I know you don't want to hear this but it really is not the cats fault maybe the guy needs to take better care of the car.

Not the cat., the neighbor!
Only kidding. Get some Pine-sol spray and spray
around the bin and on top of it.
Cat's don't like the strong smell of pine.

Sprinkle cyan pepper around the bin and inside the bin and in the bags. After a week, he won't come back.

I would report Him to the Company He works for!! Also I would call animal control to see what my options are. It is not the Cats fault but the owners fault. The poor cat must not get enough to eat. Good Luck!!!
