First things first.
Remove any programs you don't use any more. Turn off your desktop background, turn off your screen-saver (neither are necessary and both take up resources).
Run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs (try AVG for a/v and Ad-Aware SE for spyware, both free to download if you haven't got them.) Go to Start - All programs - Accessories - System Tools and run disk cleanup, followed by defragmenter. All this should help.

Then take your machine online to www.crucial.com for a free rundown of your specific setup and recommendations about RAM

Hope that helps.

The very first thing you may consider is adding more memory if you have not done so.

The most critical part of your computer as also having to many programs installed, to much (JUNK) on your computer. In the meaning of junk. if you have installed and uninsulated many programs over a point of time, there is still stuff left behind. Just un-installing today does not always remove everything.

So, what do you do? 1st off you should clean up your whole computer. This is the easiest place to start.

Click on the icon My Computer

Right Click on the icon that represents your Local Disk (C or?)

At the bottom Click on Properties

You should now be in the general tab section. Click on Disk Cleanup and wait till this is all done.

Once done Click on the Tools tab. Click on the tab to check for errors and fix errors. After this Click on the Def Tab to finish up cleaning your computer.

Once all this has been done you will have a cleaner computer, but not 100% yet.

You still need to cleane out all those left over files and shortcuts (JUNK)..

This program will do it. It's FREE! Comes with no SpyWare, no PopUps and is 100% safe to use. It's called CCleaner and you can download it here: http://www.ccleaner.com

Download this program above and run it several times.

OK, now back to the Memory. Here is one other FREE program that will help you with your memory. Called Free Ram XP Pro. It's a safe program and does jus that. Frees up your Ram (MEMORY)

Download it here: http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10070530.html

If you take the time to do all this you will see a diffrence in yor computer. The only real diffrence however is to get inside your computer and do some remodeling.

Hope this has helped you as well as others..

Hi,Jo_raz,
Firstly, trawl through your hard drive and delete unwanted files. If your PC's hard drive is more than 75% full you will start to notice loss of performance.
Delete any cookies and temporary internet files- the disk cleanup facility will give you the option, and Spybot,if downloaded, will handle the tough cookies and similar files.
Turn off any screensavers and run defrag from system tools to tidy the drive up.
Extra memory is something you can never have enough of- even an old processor can improve performance dramatically with the addition of double the amount of current RAM. It's getting cheaper all the time.
Put a bit of money aside for an upgrade- NOVATECH do some butt-kicking motherboard bundles at a great price.
Happy new year,
Misterviv

You are not a semi rubbish computer owner - we were all computer learners once! Anyway, do a disc defragment, then a disc clean up and that will tell you how much free space you can have. Failing that you may have to fork out to have a memory upgrade. It's not too expensive but well worth it in the long run

Your memory is most likely low because spyware and or virus are running in the background of your computer, causing there to be less memory available for the programs you are trying to run.
The problem is worse with poorly written programs, ie. spyware and virus because those programs usually have memory leaks, where they continue to consume more and more of your systems memory until the machine is rebooted, then the process starts over again.
Remove the junk and you will most likely be fine.
I recommend using
1. Mozilla Firefox --as your web browser
2. Adaware SE -- excellent free spyware scanner
3. spybot sd -- excellent free spyware scanner
4. Also visit www.trendmicro.com and use their free online virus scanner, especially if you have no antivirus. If you do use trendmicro to check that your antivirus is doing its job.

Additionally, how much RAM do you have in your machine? 256MB. is a bare minimum for Windows XP, more is highly recommended.
Good luck

If by "Low Memory" Windows is talking about hardware memory (your RAM), the solution will be to buy another stick of it, or upgrade to higher capacity stick of RAM. 512MB is the average for normal computing today, with 1GB being the norm for gaming PCs, and 2GB becoming increasing common (especially among Windows Vista users).

To see how much RAM you currently have, go to Start, click Run, and type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes). In the new window that shows up, under the System tab, your Memory will be about half way down the list.

You can also clear up the memory currently being used by exiting out of any programs that you don't need. You can easily check what processes are eating up your resources in the background by opening the Task Manager (hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL), going to the Processes tab, and sorting by Mem Usage. However, do NOT end any processes that are labeled SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE. Exiting these may result in system or network connection crashes. Only end the processes with your (or someone else's) username next to them.

If "Low Memory" is Virtual Memory, then go to Start, Settings, and click Control Panel. In the classic Control Panel screen, double-slick System, go the Advanced tab, click the Settings button under the Performance section, go to the new window's Advanced tab, and under the "Virtual memory" setting click Change, and increase the size.

Good luck!

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.

Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

Now lets clean up your registry

.Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.

Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.

Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection. There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.

The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php...

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

to get this - the computer has to be a laptop in need of a battery charge.

Otherwise, you have about 256K of memory and need a minimum of 512K

Ask at a computer shop and buy the right thing. They can tell you how to put it in _all you do is snap it into a slot just like plugging in a lamp cord. Easy for anyone and it costs about $60

If its a genuine Microsoft window warning you that you're low on memory, you need to spring clean your hard drive.
- Uninstall any programs you don't need, especially if you have the installation disc.
- Delete any files you don't need. Burn some to cd instead of storing them on your hard drive
- Run an anti virus and anti spyware.
- Run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool and the Cleaner.
- Finally, defragment your hard drive.
You need to do this regularly in future!

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
