Gift certificates to: a bowling alley, pizza place, McD's if the boy is really young, paintball place, movies, zoo, museum. Look in the phonebook for ideas in your town.
There are models and science kits they could do together. Don't forget a big ol' foam airplane to fly outside. In any craft store you can find rockets to shoot off for about $25. If you live near a Hobby Lobby go in and look at their science kits to see if any would be of interest to your friend and his son.

Hi! Maybe you could get them a Scalextric set, or a remote control car that they can build and race together...... If they are into Playstation 2 then you could get them racing games....... Maybe you take them somewhere nice for a holiday, it doesnt have to be abroad it could be in the UK, like a weekend away in a cottage.......
The present being, a nice romantic break for you and your boyfriend, and somewhere new to explore for the young boy
