Really not military but the facts are that researching it will show you that we spend a lot of money for education, yes more then the past, for very little benefit as standard scores keep falling because the money is spent on many thing besides educating the students-much is spent on tracking information, tacking federal funds provided with strings so you must report how and where they are spent, administrative cost, and many other expenses that might be good but are not cost effective. Try looking at your local school budget and compare year and tear, yes I did that here and found increased cost per student in constant dollars had a reverse effect on the scores then researched further and large amounts now go into administrative cost to run the system and little money is actually used directly for education. Any time money is short they talk about cutting sports, teachers, music and so on because people know those things are important and will pony up to try to get the money which then goes in to administrative support. A school should not need a principle, four assistant principles, two doctors for counseling students and five secretaries and threaten to cut teachers because money is short. The priority for too many educational systems is maintaining the political/union structure at the expense of the average student. I really dont understand putting elevators in schools in ase a handicapped child in a wheelchair attends instead of putting them in some schools and having the students requiring them to attend that school; main streaming might be nice and all that but is it worth the expense and cost of the huge majority of the students who can't get new books because of the additional cost to make sure the school is "handicapped accessible"? The one thing you can pretty well be sure of is that the teachers union will not be hurt, the administrators will not be hurt and that any lay offs or cuts will be in the most visible and popular areas so they can cry about getting more local money and increase the odds of getting it.

I don't think they should, however, if the attendant has turned the pump on, they take the responsibility that the vehicle has a clear index plate showing, that the person filling it up is aged 18 or over and that they are putting the fuel in a correct container. they should also be sure that the index can be seen on CCTV. I have had attendants phone the police and say they have had a drive off, didn't know what car it was, didn't know what the driver looked like, so they mist take some responsibility, and they are paid a fair wage, in the UK it is above the minimum wage

I worked for 4 petrol companies over a 20 year period and some companies "tried this on",I believe it to be illegal, but there were staff who would lie about drive offs and pocket the cash.I never worked for any company that was willing to pay out for adequate CCTV which would of course make things easier on everyone.
Don't let them touch your wage!

I have worked in 3 different gas stations/convenience stores and only one of them actually took money from the employees check when a drive-off occurred. The other 2 just wanted us to make sure we got vehicle make, color, license plate, time, and amount and to file a police report.

I don't know whether it is legal or not, but I do know of some stations that have that policy. I wouldn't work for someone who actually took drive-off money out of my check!

I'm not in the position to say if this is legal or not but if so, where will it end?...If a waitress doesn't get the i.d. of a customer who left without paying? If a grocery checker doesn't stop a shop lifter? If a factory worker doesn't report a co-worker for company theft? Which kid in the classroom will be held liable when another kid steals the teachers purse!?

HELL NO! If your boss makes you pay for a drive-off then you need to kick his azz! It's not the employee's fault that someone steals gas. What are you supposed to do? Stand outside with a baseball bat to make sure the customer pays?? lol

Tell your boss to piss off, and go find another job if he makes you pay for a drive off.

P.S. NO, it's NOT LEGAL to make you pay for a drive off. Your boss can NOT enforce that rule! Don't sign anything saying that you agree to that rule!

If you don't already know the right answer to this, then you should not be managing a business. Doesn't matter if it's illegal to dock their salary...doing so will create ill will in your staff. You don't want a staff with ill feelings toward you handling your merchandise and your money.

You should quit this job and go to work as a McDonalds' manager. None of them know how to manage people either.

Gut answer would be no staff shouldn't pay for drive off's.

Thats what CCTV is there for

I know plenty of waitresses and grocery store clerks who had to make up for shortfalls in their cash drawer at the end of a shift. How many drive offs has this employee had? Do we get more drive offs on his shift than others? Could he be getting him and his buddies free gas and then calling in a "drive off"? I think the boss is trying to get the employees to be more vigilant.

Legal or not it is a mean practice. If the employer is too tight to get cctv then dont work for him.

What happens when someone walks in with a gun and takes all the money?

My own view is that stealing is wrong. If any shop/supermarket/whatever make it easy to steal then its the owners problem not mine. He takes the risk, not me.

I will not use certain supermarkets because of their security systems. They presume guilt.....and I do not accept.
