I don't know? What type and year of car. maybe it is one that has the gas tank behind the rear seat and the filler hose has a leak.
Has someone transported a fuel can in the car recently?
Look under the car (on a dry day) for anything that looks wet, a stronger smell of gas and sometime white crystal formation on a small metal tube. These are all signs of the fuel tubing leaking.
Get that fixed immediately. Imagine sitting at a redlight and someone tosses a lit cigarette under the car... can we say BOOM!

You might have stepped on some at the gas station, or your gas tank is leaking. Its usually under the back passenger seat. There isnt much inbetween the back seat and the gas tank below.
