Here's a news flash: He HAS been doing what he wants in Iraq--that's why we're losing the war.

Yes he is the Commander in Chief however, that title does not give him a blank check to do what ever "he wants".

As stated in some of your answers, there are checks and balances in place to insure that one individual does not have total control of any particular branch of our government. That's not to say that some (politicians) don't have more power than others but rather, they are able to get their own way due to leverage.

You had an answer from "Aussies-O", I think the first paragraph of his answer is pretty close to accurate. The president cannot make personal decisions on issues such as Iraq with out consent and most importantly, the money. All ideas, thoughts, wants and desires in Washington (politics) are possible only, if the money is made available.

Since our government requires either a majority or two thirds majority for any resolution to pass, you can safely say that President Bush does not have unfettered decision making power. Others have to be involved!

Screaming liberals would like you to believe that he does but, most do that (screaming) as a part of their battle against the GOP. Mind you, I said most! Yes, there are liberals that really hate George Bush, they are usually undereducated in politics and will bash rather than have intelligent conversation.

I am sure that he would like to do just as he wishes, but there are so many Factions involved, that it is impossible to please them All. That is the Problem. He appears to be trying to please everyone, and that it not the way to win the War.
He needs to sit down with the Commanders of Our Military, and get their total and truthful input. Then He needs to send Someone he really can trust to get the truthful input from the Non-commissioned Officers and Our Troops. This must be Someone who will not intimidate these People because of his Importance. They need to feel that they can speak freely, without fear of reprisal from the Officers.
If he can accomplish this, he will then have the total picture of his Military at War. Then he can make a concise decision on the course to be planned to Win the War against Terrorism.

Because in the US the president does not have all out power like dictators and tyrants have. The president has to answer to congress and cannot make decisions (like Iraq) on his own.

He is, and ultimately, many decisions are his as Commander in chief and head of the executive branch of the government. BUT, we do have three branches of government, and the legislative branch, the Congress gets to determine how much money we spend on things (like war), and gets to have a say too in how our affairs are conducted. The judicial branch (Supreme Court) steps in if there would be any unconstitutional things being done (which there are not).

He indeed tried that for more than 3 years now. Since the whole world is screaming it is not working, he is looking at other alternatives.

Bush... like every other president... just does what he is told to do. He is nothing more than a puppet.

Don't forget that he went to Iraq because his father asked him to go. The white house is more concerned about votes than the lives of its soldiers. And the public demands that American soldiers sacrifice their life to protect the life of Iraq civilians.

I sadly miss the days of IKE and Patton.

He is the Commander-in-chief, but he works within a framework of our three-branch government so he never has complete and total power (power is split between legislative, judicial and executive branches of our government).

Because Iraq has leaders that need to be taken into consideration. Yes he is the Commander in Chief of the US military, but not the coalition, or the Iraqi Military. We are in a different kind of war over there. We do all we can to preserve and protect innocent civilians. The insurgents however don't care.

what the h e l l do you think he's doing? some of the most informed people in America gave him recommendations but I suppose he thinks he learned more about our military by skipping out on his national guard training! Seems to me that when his brother finagled the presidency for him some patriotism would have been included!

i didn't know bush was a cook!
