The US at least helped Saddam Hussein obtain and keep power, for many many years. We also helped him target the Kurds. When it is convenient for us, we have no qualms about having allies who are quite awful people.
Here is a link that was inspired by a deck of cards my dad got me a long time ago, called "friendly dictators playing cards: 36 of the US's most embarassing allies"

My favorites are the south american dictators Pinochet and Somoza - only because my knowledge of South American history is more solid than my knowledge of the middle east...

And you wonder why Iraqi's are fighting our troops? Since it was the "liberators" that supplied Saddam with the means to kill thousands of Iraqi's, most feel it will just be more of the same with the new U.S. backed leader. That is why we need to get out of there. Wouldn't you feel the same if it was you? Support our troops, question the leadership. The everyday soldier has no choice but to follow orders, that is why they need our support, our leaders however need to know that they had better be right.

It's the same who put Pinochet (Chile), the Shah (Iran) and Noriega (Panama) in power...
And by the way, it also supplied Bin Laden's Mujahedeen with weapons against the Soviets in Afghanistan...

The same country that sided with one of history's worst mass-murderers, Joseph Stalin. The USA.

Sometimes we side with a skunk to fight an even worse skunk.

It's not pretty, but it's true. The world is a tough neighborhood.

Once again context. We supported Hussein to fight Iran. We also supported Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan in his fight against the Soviet Union. We supported Pinochet in his fight against communism within his country. Sometimes we make a deal with bad people to fight worse people. Would you say we shouldn't have teamed up with Stalin to fight Hitler and Mussolini?

That was the US.

Put him in power, gave him chemical weapons to use against Iran and the leftovers he used on the Kurds.
