Should someone who's consistantly tardy for work be fired? By consistantly I mean every day for almost two months. Or if not tardy, the person does not show up at all, the person does not call when they will be late or not come in.

Should this person be let go? What do you think? I'm wondering because I've been sitting in here for more than an hour wondering where the hell my coworker is.....but then again, I wonder this almost daily.

Yes, we've got set hours of opperation.

This person makes the schedule so it really shouldn't be an issue???

And, our manager oversees a lot of other areas so isn't here very much.

Absolutely, The example that is being set for everyone is that they can do the same thing and nothing will happen. I advise you to speak with this person and give them a verbal warning, if it happens again issue a written warning on the third written warning terminate their employment so that when they try and claim unemployment you have all the necessary documentation.

What company do you work for that they tolerate this? Every company I ever worked for for have fired the person by now. Are you in a union or work for the government? That's about the only way I can think of the person not being fired. Perhaps there is some hanky panky going on between the worker and the boss? Sounds like it to me.

yes, he should be, but as you are not the manager, your main concern should be your job performance. If this person's tardiness is affectign your job performance, speak to them about it. Tell them how it affects your ability to do your job. IF nothing changes, then speak to your boss.

However, if it simply just irritates you because it's "not fair" because you show up on time, work infinitly harder than your slacker coworker, then you should just worry about yourself. Chances are your bosses know exactly what is going on, and if a raise or promotion comes up you will probably be the one to get it. not slacker. Focus on yourself and what you can do and you will be a lot happier in life.

The short answer is...it depends on your job.

Some jobs have set hours of operations; other jobs are more flexible. If you are in a company with rigid work hours it is the responsibility of the employee to be at work on time. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to make the hours of operation clear to the employees. It is generally the supervisor's responsibility to address tardiness or other performance issues.

It seems to me that this person who is always late is taking advantage of their position. The manager sounds like he does not oversee things completly. If this situation bothers you to such a point where it is stressing you out, why don't you talk to the manager confidentially and tell him what's going on. If you don't get any satisfaction, maybe you should look for other employment.Hope this helps.

That depends on what they and your boss has discussed. They might have something worked out. That person might have to take children to school in the morning or to a baby sitter or something. This is something you may not know. You don't always read something into this without knowing all of the facts.
P.S. Maybe the boss and this person has something going on the side. You may not know everything.

Only if the persons absence affects your ability to do your job, should you concern yourself with their absence. There may be circumstances that you are not aware of that doesn't allow the person to come to work on time and management is showing compassion. Let management take care of it...

Of course he should, this is not school where if you are late or absent you get second chances. If it was my business, he would not be working there anymore. If he is late all the time, then he should adjust his schedule to make his hours work for him and for the business. He defenately needs to go, no sense of self discipline.

there may be reasons why they are late...they may be legitimate...

nonetheless if it continued for a while yes they should be fired, they should have figured out a resolve for it.
