While Chester had a pronounced limp on the TV show Gunsmoke, it was Matt Dillon, played by James Arness, was the famous TV cowboy with a limp.

While serving his country in WWII, Arness was struck in the right leg with bullets from a machine gun at the Battle of Anzio. After his leg was set, the bones didn't heal properly and he now has a slight limp.

That would be Marshall Matt Dillon played by James Arness. Mr Arness was wounded at the Battle of Anzio during World War II. His right leg was peppered with machine gun bullets and the set bones didn't mend properly, leaving him with a slight but permanent limp.

I believe the character your thinking about was "Chester" from the old "Gunsmoke seties, played by Dennis Weaver. And I don't rember the reason anymore. The show aired in the 50's and early 60's, so long agop for a small factoid that that to stick!
