John Grisham portrayed young rookie lawyers fighting a case against odds in some novels: The Camber, The Rainmaker. The latter shows some inside views in insurance company too (and some company practices).

In some modern, but not contemporary novels:
- Dickens tales about victorian age lawyers and accountants
- Gogol' about tsar age bureaucracy in Russia (especially The Coat, Dead Souls)
- Hawthorne's introduction on his The Scarlet Letter tells about Jackson's spoils system in US civil service (and gives a portrait about a US office)
- Post office by Ch. Bukowski

Sorry, I'm biased toward legal career and civil service. And I am not updated about modern work fiction in english language.
But I read that the moviescript of Glenngarry Glenn Rose is taken from a pièce by same author (David Mamet)

"Nickle and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich is not a novel, but is a very easy read. It's about how people on minimum wage have a hard time in U.S. society.
