That may be just a U-joint or CV joint. The U-joint is relatively inexpensive to repair, the CV joint is a good bit more.
Both are far less expensive than tranny repair.
See a reputable mechanic, _NOT_ a tranny repair specialist.
Your local dealership for that make of car may be a good choice if you don't already have a mechanic.

As long as it shifts fine and works it probably doesn't need replacing. If your vehicle is front wheel drive it is most likely one of your engine mounts is broke, leaving it like this can lead to other problems as the engine shifts around in the engine bay. If your vehicle is rear wheel drive, it can be anything from the transmission mount to bad bushings in the rear.

What kind of a vehicle is it? If it is a front wheel drive ? It could be a half shaft? Which goes right into the tranny on the left side and into the suspension on the right.
