if you want to transfer files directly between all 3, you will have to use a router or a network switch. do you have dsl or cable already? attaching a router to your modem will allow you to share internet too.
you have to go into the settings of each computer and activate "file sharing" and select which folders or drives can be read from another computer. you can also set a password. to access the drives on another computer, go to my network places and look for them.
theres security risks with file sharing, but i dont really think its much.
i would just use an external hdd to store files on and if you need to transfer them, just plug it in. you can get a cheap external enclosure for $20 and a harddrive on sale for $30.

Just to network the 3 together... you need a switch. If you want to network the 3 together and share a broadband internet connection, get a router. All you need is a patch cord for each pc to connect to the switch or router...

To merge all the disks into one? you cant. if you wanted to combine disks you can create a 'Raid0' array (google it) but you would have to put the disks into 1 machine making the other machines redundant

to connect the machines for communication, use standard networking methods (hub/switch with ethernet cables, or a wireless hub, with wireless cards in each machine)

If you had just the two machines, you could use a cross-over cable (presumably all machines have ethernet ports).

You could invest in a router (the pricier but more flexible option), or perhaps buy a USB-ethernet port so that one of your machines ends up with two ethernet ports (the built-in one and the USB one) - you can then daisy-chain the machines together.

You will need to form a network either wire or wireless, then set the hard drives up for sharing. If they are all using Xp this is not to difficult, however ms warns against sharing the root drive on any computer.
