You should find out what kind of snake it is first. We have had baby copperheads get into our basement through our garage, and in our barn before, and I really don't care what they eat, I kill them. If it is a non-venomous snake however, just put it back outside, they are good pest-controllers.

If you found a baby snake in your house the mother willbe on its way. Just kill the snake and throw it outside. Dont do feeding the snake because a small snakes venom is more effective than a big one.
P.S I have never seen a snake about the length of a pencil. Maybe it is a lizard

if the snake had bitten her then the cat would know & it would already be too late. But I guess if the cat looks fine then snake is dead and can't bite the cat any more. When a snake has its head removed they can still wiggly for ashort time so the snake may still have been wiggly and dead. only problem I can see is the cat will now think that all snakes are going to be good to eat ! Are venemous snakes common in your area?

Some eat small rodents. Some eat insects. A description of the snake would be needed for a more complete answer.

I used to have about 20 pet snakes and it really depends on the kind of snake. If it is just a common garter or something similar, you would be fine feeding it small insects such as crickets, though pinkie mice are much better for it. (Pinkie mice are baby mice, still pink) You can usually buy pinkie mice at pet stores. Try www.kingsnake.com

pinky mice and crickets usually. Where are you located? Find out what species it is, if it is endangered, how big it will get and if it is venomous or not.
If you are in the US it is probably just a garter snake- green and black coloring, sometimes a light green or yellow horizontal line. One species of garter snake is endangered and if you are caught, you may get a couple thousand dollar fine and jail time.

You better find out what kind of snake you have. Even a small snake can be dangerous if it is venomous.

If you are not sure what the snake eats this means you have no idea what species it is.

Take it to a vet, it might be dangerous for you to have it, or maybe even illegal in your state.

Check first.

BTW, they eat small rodents.
