MASTER GARDENER TO THE RESCUE

If you are asking now I assume you are in a warm southern area? Cut them back the 1st week of Jan for a 1st bloom cycle in April.

When location is part of the question it is always better to get the info from a local expert. I suggest you contact your local Univ Extension office & speak with a MASTER GARDENER who will be certified as a Univ Expert for your own area.

No guess work or advise from someone who lives 1000 miles from your garden.
The best answer every time.

Roses should be pruned during the winter months from November when the plant is not actively growing. Do not prune in frosty or icy conditions. If you live in a very cold climate prune end of February or early March when the worst of the winter weather is over. Late pruning can set your rose bushes back. I've nearly finished pruning mine as I always make it a Christmas job if the weather is mild as it has been again this year.

Roses should be prune during dormant season nov. thru feb. make sure you prune roses correctly you clip at a 45 degree angle. Cut below the leave existing and also remove old branches this way air will travel through the rose bush and it'll have better a chance to produce a nicer rose.

I always prune my roses in the autumn by a third this prevents the cold winter winds damaging the plant. then in the spring prune back hard to just under a foot in height.. You will have lovely blooms come the summer.

You could prune them back a bit now to stop any winter damage then give them a proper pruning in March or April, depending where you live, then feed well. You can mulch them now too, to protect the root ball from severe frosts.

Garden Dok is right. It is different from area to area. in my county alone there are 3 different times when to prune for the best bloom results. Only an expert living in your own neighborhood can give you the best advise. Check you local college extension or county farm advisor's office to talk with a Master Gardener. They always have the correct answer for all garden problems.

Depends on variety of rose. In most cases you should already have done this in the late Autumn - early November at latest. Cut back to about two inches and cover in well rotted horse dung.
