need more info please. but my best guess is that you have a new tank and it's a bacterial bloom from either poor water quality (too much food/waste) or perhaps from being too overclean (killing the good bacteria in the gravel and filter media)

if it is a new set up that is normal. Talk to the pet store. If it is older (over 2 months) and is green cloudy it is algae. If it is grey-ish it is bacteria. In either case get stuff caleed P-CLEAR. It clumps the particles together so they are large enough for the filter to grab them. If it is algae get some thing called GREEN-X. It will help prevent new growth of algae. Also get an ammonia filter cartrige for your filter to cut off some of the algaes food supply.

NEVER clean out your entire tank unless you are doing a new set up after a disease. They need the bacteria in the water to live. You can supplement this with CYCLE. Its bacteria(the good kind) in a bottle. You only need to change about 10-25% of the water every 2 weeks. Get a gravel filter to suck up all the fish waste.

The water in my tank becomes cloudy if the filter needs cleaning out.

a bloom in the bacteria that keeps your tank stable, possibly you just cleaned or or change the filter. anyhow the bacteria has been disturbed and has to re-establish itself. OR your tanks is just dirty like a brownish-red cloudy? in that case its over feeding, limit to 3 times a week. but if its a white cloudy it will clear up in a week or two don't touch it.

To much food will make it go cloudy its more than likely a filter problem, check your filter ,has the gravel been disturbed ,if these are ok do a small water change it should help ,

Is it a new tank? If so, it is normal, give it a day or so for the filter to clean the water. Otherwise it could be too much food or that the filter needs to be cleaned out. Be sure to wash everything well in warm water, especially the stones/clay/coal and 'sponge' filters.
Good luck

You could have a nitrate problem. Aquatic centers and some garden centers sell test kits to check for this and will sell the treatment.

Your tank may have bacterial bloom and will clear in up to 30 days, so be patient. Also consult your local pet dept. ( NOT DEPARTMENT STORES ).
