What used to be November's birthstone is called "Imperial", or "Precious" Topaz. Imperial Topaz is commonly golden with pinkish or reddish overtones. Imperial topaz is very expensive and not readily available. Because of this, Citrine was used as the alternative stone and also Yellow Topaz. At some point people started to say that "topaz is topaz" and started to adopt blue topaz and other colors for November's birthstone because they didn't like the color of Citrine. As for December, Blue Zircon was traditionally it's birthstone, along with Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. Blue Topaz started becoming used due to the expense and rarity of Blue Zircon and the fact that Blue Topaz was inexpensive and readily available, not to mention blue. Basically, the stones that are being sold as birthstones today are due to affordability and availability and not what they are traditionally. Jewelry stores can't make money if customers can't afford or find the stones that are their true birthstones. I hope this wasn't too confusing! ;)

you are right. If you were born in November like I was, your birthstone is the Citrine often times people use yellow topaz instead. There is also the Blue topaz which is Decembers birthstone. Topaz comes in many different colors. Have you seen a mystic fire topaz? I think that it is a humanly altered topaz. I hope that answers your question

Pure topaz is transparent but is usually tinted by impurities; typical topaz is wine or straw-yellow. They may also be white, gray, green, blue, pink or reddish-yellow and transparent or translucent. When heated, yellow topaz often becomes reddish-pink. It can also be irradiated, turning the stone a light and distinctive shade of blue. A recent trend in jewelry is the manufacture of topaz specimens that display iridescent colors, by applying a thin layer of titanium oxide via physical vapor deposition.
