Injuries are not the reason the Flyers are the worst team ever in the history of the NHL. They sucked before all these guys got hurt, so we can't blame injuries.

One problem is they are a talentless team. While Forsberg is good, he has no talent to work with. Same with Gagne, who is a great goal scorer but has no one to set him up. Other than them, there is no one else close to being NHL caliber.

Main problem is the coaching. John Stevens must go now. He by far is the worst coach I have ever seen in the NHL. When you watch the games you see the Flyers not even doing the fundamental things, which is a result of bad coaching. If he can't get this team motivated for games, get them back to the fundamentals, and teach them how to protect a lead (a very rare occurrence), then it's time to get a coach in there who can get the players to do these things. Their powerplay is horrendous and an embarassment not just to Philadelphia, but to Hockey in general. Recent game against Florida they couldn't score when they had a 5 on 2 advantage (FLA player lost his stick). Simply pathetic.

Snider fired a proven Stanley Cup winning coach, but the one there now is clueless. Look what Hitch is doing with Columbus now. If Snider concentrated more on getting his GM to get good players, Flyers wouldn't be in this position now. I don't think Holgrem wants to spend anything this season, since it is basically a lost cause. Finish last with the worst record in NHL history, then get the first draft pick and get someone who will not produce as expected, this way we can keep with Flyers tradition (Lindros as an example).

I laughed at recent Inquirer article that said the Flyers are on par to win 20 games this season. I don't think they will win 10 games, as they have been at 8 wins in their last 10 tries.

Anyway, I had to vent. As a longtime fan I expect more. I wouldn't even waste money to watch them in person this year, and I'm surprised anyone is. Fans should all boycott home games until management makes some serious changes to show the fans they care and want to see the team do better. Since Stevens and Holmgren took over, not one thing has been done to attempt to improve this team (Fedoruk? hahaha). It is a lost season.
Oh, and get rid of Pitkanen now! He does nothing but make errors everytime he is on the ice.

The big reason the Flyers are in such a funk currently is injuries. They still have Sanders, Richards, Rathje, and Gauthier out and, as recently as a few weeks ago, had nine players on the injury list.

In general though, the Flyers have not kept up with the evolution of the game with the rule changes implemented after the lockout. Guys like Hatcher are dinosaurs and regularly get beaten by faster forwards now that they can't clutch and grab.

The Flyers' goaltending, while brilliant at times, is generally inconsistent.

The forwards are a mixed bag of young guys that need to mature quickly if they're going to make an impact and old banged up guys on the downside of their careers.

Sorry, but I gotta agree with most of what everyone has said here. Flyers are not going to be getting much better anytime soon, though getting some of the injured players back will help. They are too slow on the blueline. They do not have a consistent starting goalie. They are also lacking a real indentity or any cohesion. They also let go one of the best coaches in the league, so it is going to be hard for them to bounce back this year. That said, they have some great potential in their young players. If they can get a real goaltender, who knows what they'll look like in a couple of years?

Great question! You look at that lineup and they shouldn't be that bad. Sure they could have a rough season but they are basically the worst team in the East.

I will say Chico R. Esche is no good period. Their D is waaaay too slow and ponderous. I think they miss Desjardins, who retired. So coaching change meant nothing and now I see Boobie is back as president or some such. The Flyers seem headed down a black hole going backwards bringing Boobie back.

The team was built to fail by Ed Snider and Bob Clarke. They refused to evolve with the game and now have a painfully slow team with very little skill to be competitive.

Unless Snider and Clarke are shown the door, this team will continue to fail under their "leadership".

They flat out can't keep out with the speed of the new NHL. Guys like Hatcher were great when the league was all about clutching and grabbing, but now that simply won't work

Well, look at the team. They need a good starting goalie, the defence is weak, and there attack is not consistent. They need to totally re group and start off fresh. Look out for Forsberg to be traded.

Upper management did not evolve with the game. They are still living in the 70's
