I play hockey myself, and I recommend about every 10-15 hours you spend on the ice. You will most likely know when you need to get them sharpened because they will feel dull if you rub your finger on them (be careful) and you slide a little bit when you stop. I like mine sharp but not TOO sharp.

And also depends on the skate sharpeners in the area. Living in Columbus, there's not many people I will allow to sharpen my skates because there's just not many who can do it well. I've got a friend who does a good job and has spoiled me, but i've gone a couple months without them being sharpened (play twice a week, forward) and only get them sharpened when he's working at the rink.

Depends on what position you play and what level you play. When I skate out, I have them sharpened after every 3 games (including practices inbetween). When I play goal, I have them sharpened after every 10 games, and then I dull them right away so that I don't catch an edge in the crease.

Several factors including the type of cut you get. I go with the deeper cut so I save money sharpening but some like the shallow cut better. Personally, I go until I feel that first little "slip" of the blade, then I go turn them in to get sharpened. It's really a matter of your preference.

If you are a starting center or winger and play 12 minute periods, I would sharpen them every 3 games. If you are a defensemen you should be okay around every 5 games.

It also depends on the ice conditions. Softer ice seems to wear them out quicker.

I do it about every 5 games, on soft ice, playing defense.
