If i plug in ethernet cable the internet works fine, but my laptop wont find the wireless. On the router itself, the WLAN light is lit and activated. Any suggestions. HELP!

The first step in any diagnostic procedure is to isolate the problem. In your case, it is either the laptop or the Wireless Access Point (WAP) that is also your router. Rebooting both often fixes the problem. To reboot the WAP, unplug the electricity for one minute and then plug in again. Then reboot your laptop normally.

If rebooting doesn't fix everything, the next step is to determine which device is still working correctly so you can focus attention on the other. Easiest for you is to take you laptop to another WiFi connection to see if it is found. If so, your laptop and WiFi interface are working correctly. If not, see my "PC FIXES" below.

To verify your WAP function, bring another WiFi device into the room. Don't buy womething extra - just have a friend come over with his/her wireless laptop. If the friend's PC can find your WAP, then your WAP is working correctly. If not, see my "WAP FIXES" below.

PC FIXES:

Your wireless card may be turned off. From your list of symptoms, this is the most likely culprit. Many laptops have a hardware button for this just north of the keyboard, or they use a blue function key (the blue "Fn" button at the bottom left of the keyboard works like a Shift key for the blue-labelled functions). It is software controllable anyway. Adjust the following steps for your operating system if you aren't using Windows XP.

1. Click the Start button and select "Control Panel" (usually on the right side).

2. Find "Network Connections" and double-click it.

3. Find the row for your wireless network connection and review the Status column.

4. If the status is "disabled", right-click your wireless network row and select the "Enable" option. Your WAP should be found within 60 seconds.

5. If the status is not "disabled" and you still can't find your WAP, you may have a more serious driver or hardware problem for which the solution is too complex to describe here. Get a solid geek or professional to help you. Don't buy anything new until you get their recommendation.

WAP FIXES:
==========

1. Use an ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the router (your question mentioned that this works).

2. Open a web browser.

3. Enter the URL indicated in your router manual. This is usually "192.168.1.1" or possibly "192.168.1.100" depending upon the brand. I don't have a G624T router or manual handy.

4. Log on and click around to the wireless settings.

5. Verify that the wirless capability is set to "Enabled". Your device can function in router mode without enabling wireless access, though this is unlikely in your case since it was working previously.

6. Verify that the SSID is being broadcast (probably another "Enable" setting). It is possible for your WAP function to connect only upon request from devices that know your SSID - a common security function if you are not running an open network - and thus would not appear on any list of "found" wireless networks. Again, this was working previously and doesn't just change on its own.

7. While in there, verify the SSID and WEP settings match what your laptop is expecting. This is often the cause if the laptop is finding but not connecting to your WAP. This may not be your problem since the laptop isn't even finding the network.

8. Find the DHCP table and clear the existing connections. Again, this won't help if your laptop isn't finding the network broadcast at all.

9. Cilck to the MAC address filters and verify that this filtering is not turned on. If you do use MAC address filtering for security reasons, make sure your laptop's MAC address is entered in the table (note: this is the physical address of your laptop's network card and has nothing to do with MacIntosh computers specifically).

10. If none of this fixes your WAP, i.e., makes it appear on the list of available networks to a known working wireless laptop, you probably need a new WAP/router. Fortunately these are cheap nowadays, but consult a computer geek before spending any money.

Shut off power to your modem and router for about a minute, while you do that reboot your PC. Turn your modem on first, then router after all lights came on, on your modem.. If still doesn't work try accessing your router's settings via private address.. If you cant access it, you have an issue with the settings on your laptop/router. If you can now, but cant access the internet, its either the settings on your router or the connection from your modem to the router itself, if not the modem..

First thing I would try is unplugging the power to your wireless equip and rebooting your pc and then plug the power back in to your router. If that does not work, you may need to hard reset the router and/or check for wireless card issues on the pc.
