Broad brimmed [about 3 inches or more] felt hats generally, though in hot weather they often substituted shaped straw hats.

The best known brand is Stetson, and the company is still in business today.

uh, cowboy hats?

actually, I don't know, but my dad collects cowboy hats and my favorite is a Tom Mix (sp?) hat. they are really tall and kewl looking.
