Our understanding of Santa Claus is based on the mispronunciation of the Dutch "Sinterklaas." According to the Dutch legend, Sinterklaas was a bishop who provided gold to a poor family, so that the children would not have to be sold into prostitution. The Dutch actually believe that it is the Three Wise Men who bring them gifts on Christmas, and that Sinterklaas died hundreds of years ago. They celebrate the date of his death (December 6) on the evening before. They also portray him as wearing a suit of dark green, not red.

When explorers from other countries observed the proceedings, they came to understand that Santa Claus was the man delivering the gifts. When Christmas became a significant celebration in the United States, the Coca-Cola company used Santa's image to endorse their beverage. It was then that they changed his color from green to the colors of their own logo: red and white. And in the United States, he has worn red ever since.

No, it wasn't until the early 1900's when Coca-Cola featured Santa in an ad wearing their colors that people started to picture him in red. In some countries he is pictured in gold robes, in others he is in a green outfit with a red cape. The image of Santa is actually loosely based on Odin who would travel forth on the Winter Solstice to bring presents to His loyal followers, traditionally Odin was pictured dressed in blue with a cape.
