In the United States of America, people speak English. In Latin countries, their peopls speak Spanish. In African countries they speak their languages and so forth. Yes, if people go in droves to other countries, people should respect that country and they should be willing to adapt to new lifestyles and new language barriers. Communication is an essential key to understanding as well as working with nature and what our Earth provides.

It shouldn't matter what the states decide because they still have to adhere to the laws of the country and in the United States, there is not and has never been an official language.

I'm right there with you about LEGAL immigration but I can't say that I would be against the US having bi lingual street signs simply because we've never had an official language and while majority of the population does speak English, it is not the official language of the country.

As me about this again in a few years, my answer might be different. I think our country's population is getting out of hand.

States do not have to vote on an official language. They choose to do that. My city, Nashville just did the same thing. It was absolutely unnecessary. This is a smoke and mirrors game used by politicians to convince you they are doing something about immigration adn illegal entry. What they don't tell you is that education programs, emergency feeding programs, commodity programs, and law enforcement programs (if your department(s) are accredited) which use fedeeral funds will still use other languages when needed to carry out the duties of the programs. This does not mean there are other official languages. It simply acknowledges that you can't teach english or serve those not understanding english if you can't speak to them in their language.

In most other developed nations it is not at all unusual to hear different languages being used at times. These laws being passed are ploys by politicians to convince you that they are being effective on the issues of immigration and illegal entry. The same goes for the fence. As long as you buy their BS they figure you will not press them for real reform and effective action. Sadly, it is working.

There's nothing in the current immigration laws that says LEGAL immigrants need to take an English class or anything. Just as long as they can answer the 10 or so questions on American history, that's enough to be a legal citizen.

So assuming that everyone who does not speak English is automatically an illegal immigrant is incorrect!

You should probably take your frustration out in a more productive way and maybe work towards immigration reform, where we could have sensible policies that ALL immigrants could afford, and include a mandatory English class in the process.

Yeah, that crap pisses me off, although my native language and culture is derived of from my Samoan blood. My entire family, I believe, writes and speak English averagely well.
In the past when an influx of Samoans migrated to the US, there were no such thing, even being discussed. We went to school without ESL classes, and through the determination of great teachers encountered during my schooling, I became a full pledged American.
It is irritating to call government office and other businesses that caters to these issues, it takes 5 to 10 minutes just to have a computerized phone tele-service request my preferred language. It only happens in America, and it will all be paid for by our tax dollars.

The states voting on language are just having reactionary responses. This is America. The people coming here know that. They don't want us to change our language. They don't have the power to make us change our language. If you believe illegal immigrants without the ability to speak English and without the ability to vote can make us change our language, you really need to reevaluate the situation.

Because which ever one was most voted, because of it's amount of percentage, then that's how many people speak that language. Like say 10% of the people in TX spoke French, 30% spoke Spanish, and 60% spoke English. Which one is going to get most voted? English of course. Because more people speak English than Spanish or French.

the biggest reason I can see is because our corrupt government has "come out" for illegals against Americans! It took about 10 minutes for me to get to an English speaking person yesterday when I called SS to report my number being stolen...and then SS was not the least bit interested in flagging my number to protect me...they were just glad there was another SS number "out there" so more illegals could be employed by bushs buddies - big business! God help Americans!

This is only one of the many signs of the times... We should NOT have to vote on such an ascinine issue.. You must understand that this is only ONE of the many invasion tactics used by the Mexican Government with certain US polliticians to actually take over this country which they are hell-bent on doing......The major problem today is that the American public is terribly naive and are more interested in looking after their SUV or on suing their neighbor because their dog is barking or looking at the affairs of Britney Spears.. while in the background, the invasion is cointinuing
