I have been in this city for 6 months but sometimes people will ask me "are you a tourist?" then I say "No, I am a student". Is it because I am a Chinese, the clothes I wear or the fact I always carry a bag with me? My Chinese friends don't seem to have such a problem.

Thanks.

Usually it is how you act. If you look like you are unsure of where things are and you are always looking around like your surroundings are new, people will see you as a tourist.

On the other hand, if you look like you belong they will see you as a local. When I started college, I walked around the campus and got to know where everything was. A returning student asked me where one of the buildings was and I gave him directions. He asked me what year I was and was embarrassed when I told him that I was a freshman. It is all in how you carry yourself.

Take care,
Troy

Maybe it's the confused look on your face.
