It depends on whether you try to find out what your potential is. A person who just stays where they grew up, taking whatever job they can and living life that comes there way will never find there potential. A person who seeks an adventurous life, exploring their possibilities can discover what their potential can be. I've lived a life that some could consider 3 or 4 lifetimes. I've done things from being a zookeeper, being in the Royal Navy and working for a Merchant bank. I've done parachuting, explored the world and faced death many times. So I know myself and my potential.
I would say generally you start like an infant, blind to your potential but as time goes by, you can discover it.

No, I'm aware that there is more to me than meets the eye! As human beings, we have a great capacity for learning and development, so I believe that whilst we may not accurately determine our own potential in any one area, it helps to keep an open mind about our ability to learn new skills and to develop deeper understanding. I completed my PhD when I was 54 and learnt to swim when I was 59. I would never have predicted either of those things for myself.

I think a lot of people are - I would imagine the more confident you are the more you can predict your potential. I am still trying to find mine - currently on hiatus from a normal life as bringing up kids of my own and know I still haven't reached my full potential but haven't had that spark of interest in anything that motivates me enough yet

Well its rather subjective isn't it?
I am blind to my potential as a homicidal axe wielding maniac but not blind to my potential as a valuable member of society and a good mom.
You need to be more precise.

My mum has a great keyring that says "has anyone seen my potential?"

I feel like that, I must have some somewhere, just not quite sure what it is!
