The metaphor means that if u concentrate too much on one particular thing, u will lose sight of all the other opportunities u have.

I think people are being a bit harsh here, just because you're not successful at something you're good at doesn't mean you have failed and should give up and try something new. You'll know when it's time to move on, and I don't think that saying was intended for this kind of use.

I'll throw another old saying in - If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. Do whatever makes you happy.

You've put your eggs in different buskets, and at the moment you concentrate on one egg (thing). If not successful, then move to another thing! You can do so because you haven'g put all your eggs in one busket. Got it!?

Then you will

(a) feel a failure........ and

(b) have nothing to fall back on.

Don't put all your eggs in 1 basket because if you drop it, you ain't got no eggs left.

You should have a back up plan for just in case, putting all your efforts into one area and leaving no room for shifting to another area incase of troubles is just bad life planning.
