Do you mean a 39 year old woman is pregnant and possibly at risk of producing a child with Downs syndrome? I had my child at 39 and he is totally normal. By age 35 a woman has a 1 in 400 chance of conceiving a child with Downs Syndrome and by age 42 it jumps to 1 in 60 chance.

The risk of having a child with Down syndrome is 1/1,300 for a 25-year-old woman; at age 35, the risk increases to 1/365. At age 45, the risk of a having a child with Down syndrome increases to 1/30.
You will be offered more screening and close monitoring if you are over 35 years old.

The risk of a 40 year old woman is higher for downs syndrome births than for younger woman. However, there are many cases of woman in their 20's having children with downs syndrome. If you are pregnant, they will do a test to check and makes sure everything is okay. They do this test on woman over 35 who become pregnant. Don't stress over this as it will only make you sick. Good luck and GOD bless.

So glad you posted. I was 39 when I got pregnant. I did not want amnio because I knew I was having the baby no matter what. The doc suggested the AFP test and I had that. The doc called and told me my test results suggested that I would have Down's baby. I cried and stared at the ceiling for 8 hours. I then went for genetic counseling and was told that my blood levels were normal on the AFP but the reason that I failed the test was they factored in my age. Supposedly the risk of having Down's baby goes up with age but the counselor also told me that Down's is more common in teen pregnancies. Knowing that my blood levels were normal in the AFP test, I disregarded that they factored in my age and didn't worry so much. I know someone who had amnio and still had a retarded child, so you just hope for the best and if the child is Down's, you will love it too. But really, the whole parenting thing is scary, I know!!!

there is a risk of having a DS child at any age, however the chances increase as you get older. I was 39 yrs when I became pregnant with my 3rd son. I failed the triple screen so the dr. wanted me to have a high intensity ultra-sound done. to look at the width of the fungal fold (back of the neck) and the length of the long bones such as a femur (DS kids have shorter long bones) as well as look for heart defects. my son ended up having av-canal; a congenital heart defect, which is common in kids with DS. they gave me the option of an amnio, which I took, I wanted to be prepared. after 2 days of agonized waiting the doctor called and told me my son had DS....I cried for the loss of my "perfect" son, and I was scared beyond belief about how were we going to raise a child with disabilities. but after 3 yrs of being the mom to this very special little boy....I wouldn't change a thing about him!!! he is the light in my heart! sure there are days when he is just like other kids his age....naughty, but he is being a kid. he may do things at a slower pace than what is considered "normal", but he does do it. his determination to reach his goals is admirable.
you get whatever God gives you for a child and you do the best that you can to make their life meaningful and that they grow up to be the best that they can be. it doesn't matter if the child has DS or not it is just being a good mom.

If she's a primip, the risk is about three times that of a younger first-time mother. There are ways to determine whether her unborn has developed this disorder before birth. She should already have been advised about these sort of things by her obstetrician. If not, she should ask. The Internet is not a proper place for such questions.

39 is very old for a a retarded woman. Most are killed by cats or chasing pennies in the street. Consider yourself a survivor in a world against Down's Syndrome.
