I use HBH betta pellets

2006-12-28 01:24:44 · answer #1 · answered by Nunya Biznis 6 · 1 0

I don't have a Beta, but my son does. He bought beta food from a pet store, but when he is short on funds he uses food from Wal-Mart. You just have to keep the tank clean and change the water frequently.
Here is what the beta facts site says:
Q: What should I feed my beta fish?
A: BettaMin Floating Flake Food and Delecta Freeze Dried Blood Worms
are available in most pet stores and Wal-Mart Stores. We also
feed the fish in our fish bowls a few live Black Worms three days a week and
occasionally some live or frozen brine shrimp. A little bit of live food is
very good, but too much seems to cause problems. this combined with a few
Black Worms every second or third day is never a bad idea.
Here are some links that might help with care and feeding.
The 2nd link has a bunch of great Q and A for these colorful fish!
Hope this helps!!!

~basic beta pellets
~blood worms (frozen or freeze dried)
~cooked unseasoned chicken in tiny pieces
~cooked hot dog
~blanched romaine lettuce
~I think their favorite is fish fry. Baby mollies, platys, and swordtails because they get to chase them. I drop one in every week.

feed mainly the pellets and give them the others a few times a week (or whatever your feeding scedule is) as treats.

You do NOT have to change their water frequently. There is good bacteria they need to survive. Only about a quarter of the water should be taken out and replaced about once every 10-14 days. Any green stuff on the glass just wipe off with your hand or an algae sponge. It will come back but it will lokk better any way. They like stagnant water. Dont put them in anything too deep or they will actually drown ( i know its a fish but they breath mostly from the air.) Keep it under 3 feet. Do your research first. Your best bet is a book. People forget information sometimes

GOOD LUCK!

My betta is actually pretty picky, and he won't eat betta bits of any variety. I mainly feed him live brine shrimp. I also give him frozen blood worms and he will eat Bio Blend.

As to the advice that you don't have to do frequent, complete water changes- unless you have your betta in a FILTERED, CYCLED tank, this is NOT TRUE. That sort of water-change recommendation is for a CYCLED TANK, and a tank cannot cycle without a bio-filter of some kind. It is also very difficult to keep a cycle stable in a tank less than 3 gallons.

If you don't have a filter, please do NOT only change 25% every 10-14 days! Unfiltered containers such as bowls, vases, and small tanks cannot establish a nitrogen cycle and should be changed 100% every 7-10 days if it is 2 gallons, more frequently if it is less.

pellets which are made for bettas should provide all the nutrition your fish needs. it is advisable to feed them brine shrimp and tubifex worms only when you want your fish to mate and breed.
