The ribbon cable may be loose inside the computer. The power is still connected, that is why it is opening and closing, but the data cable (wide gray cable) is loose, so the computer can not see it.

If this is not the case, it could be a bad cable, bad cd-rom drive, bad connector on the mother board, or even a few viruses cause this.

Some registry edits can repair this if it is none of the above, but be very careful editing the registry as this can cause even more problems if you delete something important.

This also could be related to the Sony/BMG rootkit that was on some music CDs that were released last year. When you played the CD on a computer, it installed a rootkit that reported back to Sony.

This was found out later, and Sony put out a "fix" for the rootkit. This "fix" causes symptoms similar to the ones you are seeing.

The easiest and safest way to fix the problem caused by the Sony rootkit "fix" is to reinstall Windows.

Turn off, disconnect the power sources to your computer. Open the case, and disconnect the power and IDE ribbon cables to the optical drives for a few minutes. Then re-connect them and close the case, turn on the power and WAIT for the drivers to load up, when the balloon messages in the tray disappear on their own, the drives should be detected by WinXP.

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem cn be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful.

Well obviously you dont have a Mac so there's your first problem. But make sure that you have the CD drive all the way connected. If that doesn't work you need to find out what kind of computer it is, and/or if it is a CD drive that you installedmake sure you have the proper drivers installed. But like I said I don't have a PC so I'm not as familiar.
