The Ancient Celts said that the 'Day began at sundown', not at sunup as we now traditionally believe.

The Celtic Celebration known as 'Samhain' is celebrated on Oct 31st. The actual date that the Celts celebrated this corresponds to Nov. 1st. This is now known as Halloween.

The First night you refer to appears to be celebrated on the last night of the year, and was originally created back in 1976 by some Boston artists. My guess is one of those artists was a historian.

Cutesy way to promote citizens paying a premium to be on their own streets. Needs the ACLU to give this crap a constitutional challenge. The poor are not invited - only the cutsy trendy duppies who can afford a "ticket" to be on public streets.

first night is new to me, in the UK it's termed "old years night" or "new years eve"
