I still have the original alternator on this vehicle, and even my mechanic is flabbergasted by this (I already have nearly 134,000 miles on my car and have had no major problems yet). Am I just lucky, or can alternators really last this long?

Yes, alternators can and do last this long. I traded in a Corolla with over 350,000 miles on it, and had replaced the alternator only once.

My daughter had to replace the alternator on her Mazda yesterday. It had about 128,000 miles on it - this was the first replacement.

So it is partly luck and partly that they do last this long sometimes. However, be prepared for alternator trouble before much longer. My daughter's problem happened quite suddenly with little warning. A bearing seized in the alternator, which led to the belt breaking, and then some engine over-heating. Luckily her car was in our driveway when it all happened.

I have worked on cars with over 200,000 miles that have the original alternator.
