My sister is 17, and she has no idea what college she wants to go to. She thinks that she wants to go into engineering, but she's not quiet sure yet. She's gonna be a seinor next year, and I think that she should know what some of her options would be since she doesn't really have any idea.

If she has no idea what she wants to do, then she should apply to a medium to large size schools that have lots of options and majors including all of the liberal arts and sciences, art, enginnerring, business, communications, poly sci, int'l relations, etc. Unless you are in a rigorous program from day one, most schools fill your first 1.5-2 years with general education courses/electives so you can find out what you want to do. You should also apply to schools in which it is fairly easy to change your major. My top recommendations are:

Cornell University
University of Virginia
Duke University
Columbia University

Also look into other state schools such as the University of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts @ Amherst.

Since she doesn't know what she wants to do yet, she could just go to a local community college until she gets her bearings. f a University is a must, a public state university would be a good choice. State schools have a wide selection of majors, the credits are transferable (in case she decided on a major not offered by the first school she goes to) and the in-state tuition is cheapest.

Theres a lot of factors when deciding on which college to go to. Does she want to stay near home or move away? If she wants to stay near home, I would recommend a city college because its affordable and since she wants to do such a tough subject thats deep into physics, jobs dont care which college you went to as long as they had an engineering program (partially because there are very few engineers and demand is high for them). Plus if she changed her mind from engineering, its not a huge set back in money if she would go to a city college. I live in NY and tuition is about 2500/semester. Theres city college that is known for engineering. But remember, engineering is very very hard! if shes a genius at math and physics, by all means.

Great Engineering schools include Columbia University, Cornell University, Vanderbilt University, Tufts University, MIT, and Stanford. But those are all really exceptional schools, and its really hard to get into one. Maybe look for more state universities and try for a good engineering college for grad school
