My son has had a head cold now for three days and its not getting better. It is not a really bad cold, but he has mucus build up in his nasal cavity and suction is not helping him. What else can I do?

Please don't let anyone make you feel bad because you have not taken him to the doctor. First of all the doctor can't prescribe anything for him for a cold. Just like a doctor can't do prescribe anything for adults for a cold. My 3 month old had a cold and I called my doctor and they even told me there really was nothing they could do. As long as he is still eating good and does not have a fever he will be okay. If he does I would call your doctor. Babies usually start getting their first cold around this time. My doctor did say not to use any infant cold medicine because at 3 months she is still young. He did tell me to use saline drops and to suction it out. It did help with my daughter and you should get a humidifier, make sure you clean it everyday. My doctor said if you do that and use the saline drops he should be better in a couple of days. I hope this helps. And don't worry. This is only the beginning. My sister has two children and I often call her for advice and she tells me that this is just the first of many many colds. Good luck!

Make sure his room isn't too dry. You might be able to use one of those new Vick's plug ins..I don't know what the recommended age is. You should also give him something to dry up the nose like tylenol infant cold. Use it during a time when he doesn't normally nap though becasue it can cause restlestness. Drying out the nose will also help prevent the mucus from going into his lungs, so he doesn't get a cough. It takes babies longer to fight off colds. My five month old got sick a week and a half ago, and this morning is the first morning she sounded like her usual self. You can always call your doctor, but if its just a cold and no high fever and no cough there isn't much he/she can do for you. As long as your baby isn't under weight, overthe counter infant cold medicines are fine, just call your doc and ask how much he/she recommends. Its usually half the dosage. I agree with the other moms, try the nose drops too. I'm not so into humidifiers becasue they can generate mold and bacteria, but that's just my personal choice.

1. Use a humidifier
2. Use saline nasal drops before you suction - that will loosen the mucus so you can get it out
3. Go to the doctor - 3 months is too young to take a decongestant over the counter, but they may be able to prescribe something
4. Let him sleep propped up or with you holding him up so that his mucus does not drain down his throat while he sleeps

Good luck, and don't worry - these things usually go away in about a week. My daughter had her first ear infection at 3 months old and was miserable, but it only lasted about a week and then she was good as new. ;-)

Get some Little Noses, nose drops for babies. They clear up the nose wonderfully. If he has a fever or sounds congested in his chest I'd take him to the doctor.

get him some nasal drops, i use "ayr" brand from my pediatrician. you can then suck it out or let it in there to break up the mucus and make it easier for him to breathe.

also, you can use a humidifier to help moisten his air in his room while he sleeps.

my little guy is stuffy most mornings from the heat in the house. i use those drops and they seem to help him out!

take care:)

"what else can I do?"

What do you think?

TAKE HIM TO THE DOCTOR.

This is an internet forum, not a medical service. Don't take ANY medical advice you get here. What if it's wrong? How will you know until it's too late?

The health of your child is too important to risk on advice you get in a forum.

SEE YOUR DOCTOR
