I had to do a full system restore and followed the instructions when doing so. Now I cannot access all my backuped files in the external hardrive. I called the manufacturer and they said it would cost $300 to $1000.

Unplug it and plug it back in, most of those EHDD are PnP and should find it again.. If that doesn't work, if there was software or drivers for the drive you might want to reinstall those. Other then that, this is why I hate PC restore. Its really a hit or miss, depending on what you have installed and changed between the present day and that restore point. It can really screw things up in your registry..

UNLESS there was corputed files or a virus on the External HD, make sure it is turned OFF BEFORE you do a system restore next time if you have to. No changes will be made to the Ex. HD. and you will have the files still intact on it. The other advise you have got to your questions are good also. This is just help in the future.
