Hi

I would recommend the Christmas markets in Krakow, we went early this year just as they were finishing. Not only is it a beautiful place, lovely people its served by a couple of low cost airlines and cheap when you get there. Hope you enjoy it if you get there next year.

Germany's dotted with hundreds of Christmas Markets, so you can literally make the rounds in a certain area if you wish. Koln's was nice but probably the busiest I've ever been too--it was just packed with people. Nurnberg has a famous Christmas Market, too--it's quite large even though it also sees a lot of people, and finding parking can be a challenge if you drive there. Rudesheim, on the Rhein near Mainz and Wiesbaden, also has a famous Christmas Market, and it's quite a pretty one, especially up in the alleyways. Mainz and Wiesbaden themselves have pretty nice Christmas Markets, as does nearby Frankfurt in the Romerplatz. Heidelberg has a nice little Christmas Market in the Altstadt under the castle, and Rothenburg's Christmas Market just fits in perfectly with its medieval German charm--especially if you're there at night, and it's been snowing. As I've said, you can go to any German city (or even good-sized town) and find a Christmas Market during the Christmas season; and you'll likely find that folks are usually partial to the ones located where they live ;)

Cologne is reputed to be the best in germany, I went several years running as was so good, but if I was to go to more, I would go to Prague for them, they have the stalls with traditional decorations and food and drinks, but the surroundings are far better than Cologne to make a complete break, flying time is only about 2.5 hours now

If you are close to Cologne then you can also visit Brussels as it should be close to you. The stuff on sale here are quite different than of those in Germany.

I would recommend Koln in Germany and Vienna - Austria. The second one is really fascinating.
