Politicians, even those who enter politics for the most pure motives, must have access to power in order to perform what they believe to be good acts. In order to secure power, they must to some extent make compromises that go against their ethics. Having once got power, they make more compromises to keep it. Ultimately, politicians engage in the single-minded pursuit of gaining and maintaining their grip upon power. Lord Acton was right when he said, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."
