I have an anxiety disorder and my doctor put me on 20mg of prozac (low dose). Once I got pregnant, I asked my OB/GYN, primary physician, and my psychologist and they all 3 said it is safe to take throughout my whole pregnancy (even while breastfeeding) and it is one of only 2 approved antidepressants to take. They all also said that with my increase in hormones this is definitely not the time to come off it. Of course I researched it and it looks like the only side effects could be that the baby may be irritable a few days after its born because of withdrawal (crying a lot, etc). But, that was even a slim chance. I was just wondering if anyone else took an antidepressant while pregnant?

I certainly have found that doctors and midwives don't know everything. They can make mistakes or minimize something you might feel in your gut. My personal experience was with Zoloft. I was given a small dosage and had some sort of reaction to it. I was shaking to near seizure levels and was barely able to talk for hours. It looks like it was not an allergic reaction but it was still dangerous as I was late in my 2nd trimester. Personally I feel if you have been taking Prozac, then the doctors are likely right, but if you feel you should look for alternatives I advise to go with your instinct. In my personal experience anytime you take a drug you are taking a risk, whether to your or your unborn child.

There are also lesser forms of anxiety medicines you can take which is what I began taking after the Zoloft reaction. I believe there were 3 different ones that my doctor offered to me. I have also done a lot of research about anxiety and stress during pregnancy and will advise that you take into consideration that there are studies that show in detail what stress and anxiety can do to a fetus. One of which is causing your child to also have anxiety or behavioral disorders.

The best solution for me was to deal with my anxiety by taking myself out of a situation, "meditating" in a way, and putting things in perspective. Thinking about the child growing inside of me and the peace that he needs. True though, with a 2 year old and other life circumstances, it hasn't been full proof, but it has been worth it. I feel as though practicing this will help me after the baby is born as well as I was told Zoloft was NOT ok to take while nursing.

I see that you are going to a psychologist. I also started seeing a counselor and it has helped more than I could have imagined. My experience with Zoloft really scared me about taking anxiety medicine to the point where I became anxious about taking them! The counselor has helped me through this time and I am now 38 weeks along and the baby and I are doing well.

I am taking Zoloft. I asked the doctor to prescribe it for me 2 weeks ago and he did. He started me off with 25mg for one week and then 50mg for the rest of the pregnancy. I am sure if the drug was not safe, he would not have prescribed it.
