An acre is a measure of land surface area regardless of whether the plot is square or round or irregular. However, if there are a series of square acres in a line, it should be possible to say that a land mass is 10 square acres long much as we say a ladder is ten rungs high. That would of course represent a very limited use of acres to measure length. Anything is possible? Acre-foot is also used to measure the volume of water in a reservoir. Acre originally meant any tilled or enclosed field.
