You have a Network Card installed or a Network "Card" inbuilt into your Main board which is normal on current machines.

If Windows XP detects that the network "LAN" is not pluged in - that is a cable is not connected you will get the message you discribe.

To disable it do this:

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections - Right click over the network connection and select Properties - look down the bottom and de-select the two notification boxes.

you network connection is poor - either the connector or the cable at either ends is.
you can either try a new network cable or do the following.
try adjusting the speed of your network connection to 10mbps to get a better result. you can do this by the following

go to control panel --> network connections --> right click on local area network --> properties.
once in properties click on the configure button. another window will appear. click on the 'advanced' tab. find something called 'link speed' it may be labelled differently and change the value to 10mbps / half duplex.
click ok then ok again and it should work.
let me know if it does not.

1. Bad NIC
2. Bad cable
3. Bad port on the distant end.

Those are the ONLY three possible causes.

If you made up the cable yourself, make sure it's done properly or just replace it.

Try a different port at the distant end.

Try a new NIC

in case you're utilising a router with instantaneous capacity, yet another enjoyed ones can scouse borrow and hog the sign, whether you're related by cable. This used to harass me to no end. stable element i could no longer tell which neighbor it replaced into that replaced into stealing the sign. i'd've been crimson-confronted with anger and at their doorstep in a jiffy.
