I've an open fire which hasn't been used in a few years, There a gas pipe that runs round the back of it - just questioning if I stoke up the open fire, what are the fire risks with the gas pipe - If I boxed it in with Some ceramic heat reflecting tiles would that help ?

Thanks

Absolutely NO get it repositioned and then make sure that the flue is suitable for what you wish to do. Get a CORGI reg engineer to move the gas pipe and he may well be able to advise you on the flue situation.

Whoa Whoa!! What are the chances this is just what I have. A gas valve to one side of the fireplace, gas piped to the valve, and to a pipe that runs along the back of the fire pit. Holes every so often. The whole thing intended to be used as an igniter for the fireplace.

If you find those holes, you can be pretty certain it is.

In the absence of any device to introduce air into the system, there is no danger of an explosion. Unless the jets of gas from the holes impinge on a noncombustible surface, there is no danger from carbon monoxide.

If it is properly designed, there is a considerable amount of pipe outside the fire pit, before the valve location. This allows for dissipation of heat, before reaching pipe with gas in it.

The only hazards I can see would be if one were to turn on the gas and not light it, or burn the gas with the damper closed.

Seems like you are building a wood fueled fire in a fireplace that was engineered for gas flame.

If that is so stop! The heat and intensity of wood heat would overwhelm most gas flame flues [read: chimneys]

Some gas heat sources actually use PVC piping for the exhaust system. Low or minimal exhaust heat designed.

hi I even have merely spoken to my husband and he has instructed me which you ought to locate out if the chimney has been lined or no longer, it comprises a smoke attempt from a corgi registered plumber and that they might desire to be sure if the smoke is going up the chimney of back into the room if it comes back then its no longer lined. to locate if it has had a gasoline furnish to it seem to the two the left or the suitable hand fringe of the chimney breast to be sure if there's a capped off pipe popping out of the wall, in case you do no longer see one you will ought to look under the floor boards because of the fact it in step with threat under floor point, if there is no longer then it would desire to have been an open hearth place. desire this helps. please are not getting ripped off and make useful he's CORGI REGISTERED.

Take the pipe out and have it capped off way back from the fire.

The fire risk is fairly substantial!

It would be better and cheaper to get a plumber to remove the pipe completely. You would not want an explosion, would you?

you really must ask the help of a corgi registered gas fitter, and do not take it for granted, that an advert in the local paper etc, means someone is really qualified! contact corgi, they will have registered people who advertise on their books....
