for that to happen ,u have to be online

It can happen if u are offline, viruses, time bombs, logic bombs
(time bombs, logic bombs--tthey are normally dormant and are triggered by the
occurence of some event),trojans (trojan--programs thatperform desired activity openly and undesired activity at the back) stored on ur pc can cause ur s/m to operate abnormally.

some viruses cause ur cd rom drive to open and close.
some viruses cause ur antivirus to get uninstalled.
of course some viruses cause ur os to crash.(so having
a backup of important data is a precautionary measure)
best way is to scan ur pc for viruses regularly.
INSTALL A FIREWALL ON UR PC,IT WILL KEEP TRACK
OF PORT SCANS DONE ON UR PC FROM OTHER MACHINES,AND WHICH IP ADDESSES UR PC IS COMMUNICATING WITH

Close all programs including the ones that run at startup like yahoo massenger and the like. Then go into your control panel. Click on performance. Then the event viewer. Take your hands off the keyboard and mouse and wait a second or two. The activity level should drop to nearly flatline. If someone is remotely accessing your pc, the meter will show activity. to test it for sure unplug the internet from your pc and if it's really happening the meter will drop to near flatline again. Run your antivirus and turn up your firewall.

I depends. Start looking at open ports and stange programs running in the background without you having installed/invoked them.

To take a look at what ports are open you can use netstat from the command prompt or try using cports from www.nirsoft.com. To take a look at what processes are running, use Windows Task Manager (Win2k/WinXP) or get hold of PView from www.teamcti.com/pview.

If anything looks suspicious in either of the lists, keep and eye on it and check it against known malware. If it is a positive, kill the process and get rid of the executables/DLLs responsible.

The best way to protect yourself is to get a firewall. It'll help you keep track of all connections to and from your PC. This way you can allow/reject access to your PC or the internet very easily. Try ZoneAlarm from www.zonelabs.com, it is a great firewall and has a freeware version too.

a hacker can do many things 2 let you know you have been hacked.. like turning your home page upside down, making your mouse run wild and opening soo many windows.. hackers can freeze up your mouse one day and freeze up the keyboard the next.. they can put a black box on your comp and track your moves.. they also can jump in on your instant messenger, using your screen name at the same time you are using it and talk junk.. they can change your account password and delete your stuff.. they can steal all your personal information in your account.. always good 2 have your firewall on.. always update and run your anti spyware.. everyday if need be.. never use your real name or address in accounts.. never use a screen name that will lead back 2 your account. and never put your addy in open chat or in profiles.. never open mail from the unknowen.. it's just one way of hackers getting in.. i do know if someone has a pocket computer and they are driving by your house, it will get in your comp.. thats about all i know about remote.. bummer eh
