The cooling system may have "short lined" due to a cracked block, and the water your measuring isn't picking up the engine heat. to the mechanic.

You addressed the most common problem. By removing the thermostat you've elimated a faulty thermostat. The next issue would be the water pump; it may be failing. However, this usually registers on the gauge. With a 10 year old car you could have both the pump and gauge failing. With a company like Toyota, don't hesitate to contact their customer service/omsbudsman for help in locating a repair dept in your area. Sometimes you need to go to the source for solutions. They can also check to see if there are any outstanding recalls that might solve the problem. Trust the "queen of the used cars" when I say that a little time and research on your part will save lots of money that could be spent having a dealer "troubleshoot" your problem. Good luck!!

Your risking serious engine damage by not fixing this problem ASAP. First, don't trust your temperature gage. Second, bring the car to your mechanic and have him measure the engine temperature with a non contact Infrared temperature gun pointed at your thermostat housing. Also have him check the cooling system including the water pump weep hole under the pump shaft. If it shows signs of leakage, you need a new water pump.

you need a new gauge or sending unit or both. I'd try the sending unit first.
