i recently watched this film, i have seen it before, but i have only just realised that i dont know the reason why she smashes the light bulbs, was just wondering if anyone knows the reason for this

Agree with C.J. If she is swimming in the ocean at night away from shore, she has to know where land is and her house. She was just waiting to escape. That is also why she learned to swim.

Because she was under a control freak and had to have everything perfect in her life. So when she finally decided to get out from under this monster she broke the light. Then for effect they had the monster of a husband step on the glass to show he wasnt in control of her anymore. I doubt it has anything to do with her not being seen coming back onto the beach.
