Actually most of us do not drink enough water to stay truly hydrated. Everyone should drink between 8-10 8oz glasses of water a day. When you are pregnant you need to be extra careful of your nutritional intake. If you are not hydrated you cannot produce enough amniotic fluid to help care for the baby.

Early on you are producing blood and amniotic fluid for the baby. Later in pregnancy, if you aren't drinking enough, you'll find that dehydration causes contractions.

You need to drinks LOTS of extra water throughout your entire pregnancy. This is because the baby is taking your fluids for themselves. It is possible to dehydrate is you don't drink extra fluids, like water and juice.

Usually, you're more thirsty in earlly pregnancy, anyways. I know that I was.
You and the baby need water, though. That's what the majority of our bodies are made of.

in addition to others, the amniotic sac is full of fluids, increased blood within your body, and to remove toxins would be other reasons for the extra fluids.
