Anything that's not 'Mainstream' or 'Too Commercial.' Bands like The Cure, Evanescence, Violent Femmes, The Gufs, R.E.M., Marilyn Manson, etc. All of these have enjoyed some extent of success... Generally a bit more obscure. Not as radio friendly... For instance, The Cure are generally (not always) deep and dark, song lengths are often extended (seven, eight minutes), sometimes there is no 'catchy' chorus, etc.

Wikipedia has a great article on this (see below). Basically Alternative Rock came as a result of off-shoots of what was the traditional/classic Rock formula. This saw the rise of sub-genres such as Punk and New Wave.

Recently, Alternative Rock has morphed to refer to those "Indie" bands...i.e. bands that aren't tied to commercial record labels.

It means not the common rock music that we know of. It is a type of rock music that was established in the 1980s and had been widely circulated after 10 years. It is punk rock- music that didn't fit into the mainstream rock music. It is a combination of grunge, indie rock and pop, Britpop, gothic rock.
