Tell him you have to talk with him. Then go on to ask him what his plans are. Tell him that although you value his friendship, you cannot afford to keep him in your house any longer. He was supposed to stay a couple of days and it has now turned into a couple of weeks. Where was he staying before you let him into your home? You can do this wihout hurting him. Besides, I think he's taking advantage of you. The longer you stay shut, the longer he's going to take advantage of you. Therefore, take the risk of hurting him. (Believe me, he'll just move on) Better him than you.

He's turned into ..." The thing that wouldn't leave". He is not a friend, he is using you. He obviously doesn't have a problem lying to you. I get the feeling that he'll take as much as your willing to give him. Time to drop the "nice guy" persona and stop letting this guy use you.

During any night, ask him if you can have a chat. Go somewhere where you two can chat in private and tell him nicely that he is imposing on you and if he could find other lodging for awhile.

you really ned to sit him down and have an honest discussion with him about your expectations. i think he is using you and just looking for a place to crash. my vote would be to kick him out.
